Tips for the Busy Triathlete

As a father, husband, and full time worker, I though I would provide some tips I’ve learned along the way for the triathlete that has trouble finding the time to fit in all their training needs due to a busy and hectic lifestyle.

Tip 1: Make your training time the most effective by planning in advance.   Know exactly what time you are going to start your workout, the route you are going to take, and the duration.

Tip 2:  Early to bed, early to rise.  I like to do my workouts before the rest of the house is awake.  It’s even better if I can get my entire workout in before everyone wakes up.

Tip 2: Be considerate of your spouse.  They should have the” right of first refusal”.  NEVER insist on getting a session in.

Tip 3: Make family time the priority.  See tips 2 and 3.

Tip 4: Work out during your lunch break.  I swim during mine.  Be sure to tell your boss and co-workers if you are going to be gone a little longer than usual too.

Tip 5: Keep extra training gear in your car.   Running shoes, swim jammers, and a pair of goggles will do.  You may be able to squeeze in a run or swim when you least expect it.

Tip 6: Take a day off.  I’ve found that most triathletes are a little obsessive/compulsive.  It’s not life or death if you have to miss a workout or have to take a day off here and there.  Your body needs the recovery time too.

Tip 7: Use a jogging stroller if you have a little one.  It’s a great leg workout too.  It’s like your running at an incline the whole time.

Tip 8: Buy an Indoor bike trainer.  You can watch TV and get a great bike workout in at the same time!

Tip 9: Set realistic goals for yourself and don’t over-commit.  It’s very easy to get burned out that will have a negative impact on your overall performance.

Tip 10: Use time normally spent watching TV (or playing iphone games) and do a workout.  TV is a complete time killer.
